SpaceX has developed a unique ceramic based heat shield called “TUFROC” that will help insulate Starship’s stainless steel hull during the extreme reentry phases. As the heat shield tiles warm up, they flow bright red and also expand to help close the gaps between the tiles. The hexagonal shape helps prevent hot gases from having a straight line to accelerate through, forcing the gases to make sharp bends at each intersection. A common misconception is that reentry heat is caused by friction, it’s not. Heat on reentry is mostly caused by the compression of air molecules and due to the law of thermodynamics will heat up and might get so hot they can turn into a plasma.
